DJO Global Inc. had a sizeable booth at this year’s meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Francisco, Calif. And for good reason—the company used most of the space to display its plethora of bracing and support products, from the colorful Exos line to the lightweight DonJoy brand. Among the braces showcased during the three-day event was the OA Nano (one of the newest members of the DonJoy brand family), a lightweight off-loading knee brace for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. The brace, according to DJO, incorporates a new generation of nano magnesium alloy called “nanoMAG” (hence the OA Nano moniker), a material used in such industries as aerospace, automotive, cell phone and computers. Company executives claim the OA Nano provides the light weight of regular magnesium with the strength needed to leverage the firm’s OA Adjuster technology to provide arthritis pain relief on the off-loading side. Weighing just 14 ounces, the device uses regular magnesium on the thigh and calf cuffs for easy custom adjustment. “The combination of these lightweight and functional technologies results in an OA brace you can almost not feel, which takes patient acceptance to a higher level,” Steve Ingel, senior vice president and general manager of DJO’s Bracing & Supports business unit, said in a news release. Other products on display at the Vista, Calif.-based company’s booth included the IceMan Clear3 cold therapy device as well as the X-Act ROM Knee and X-Act ROM Elbow braces. The IceMan “clear cube” is described as a translucent, stackable cold therapy product that enables clinicians to instantly identify ice and water levels without having to lift the lid. Like its predecessors, the IceMan Clear3 is connected to a wrap-on or cold pad that surrounds a joint with up to seven hours of cold pain relief; the unit uses a patented semi-closed loop system that allows the device to maintain a constant, accurate temperature. It also features a thermostat for easy temperature adjustments. The X-Act ROM Knee and X-Act ROM Elbow post-operative braces are designed for quick application following surgery. Both devices feature a contoured fit that can be adjusted for each patient as well as an anti-migration foam and an aluminum hinge that gives users a precise range of motion, according to DJO. “We are excited to accelerate our franchises in bracing in cold therapy with four major product launches this quarter,” DJO President and CEO Mike Mogul said. “Each of these four new products represents a leap forward in design and function using new materials and technologies that make the products lighter and easier to use while remaining cost effective treatment options.” The new products should be available in early spring.
